Münster, located in the Federal state of North-Rhine Westphalia, offers a surprising mixture of both old and new. Situated along the Aa, it has a population of around 270,000 and is the heart of Münsterland. The city is known as much for its reputation as the bicycle capital of Germany as it is for its service and administrative institutions. Many important legal institutions, such as the Constitutional Court and the Higher Administrative Court, can also be found here. Münster was awarded the title of “World's Most Liveable City” in its size category at the 2004 LivCom Awards. In 2009, the city was ranked second place in the INSM-Ranking in the category of “Most Successful Cities”, also making it the most successful city in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Westfälische-Wilhelms Universität, one of Germany's largest universities, has an enrollment of around 36,800 students (Winter Semester 2009/2010) and offers approximately 150 fields of study in 15 departments. Lessons take place in one of the university's 212 buildings located throughout the city. The WWU boasts an excellence cluster funded by the “Excellence Initiative”, eleven collaborative research centers, four DFG research grants, nine post-graduate programs, six graduate schools, seven junior research groups and 17 research centers, making the university one of the most distinguished in the country in terms of performance. Because it is also only one of seven other universities located in Münster, the city is largely influenced by the students who live here. Website from the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster »
